LAKE CHARLES – With a blend of veterans left over from a stunning playoff run last spring and several freshmen and sophomores playing key roles, the last thing Walker could afford to do Monday in a Class 5A playoff opener was walk on a high wire without much a of a net.
For the first time in three years, Denham Springs High is still alive after the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

BATON ROUGE -- Putting the ball in play was a major challenge for both Walker and Scotlandville on Monday. When the Wildcats did make contact, though, they made the most of those opportunities and the Hornets never did.

WATSON -- Wins don’t have to be glossy or exotic or end with a whole lot of drama. They just need to finish with one more run than the other guy.
DENHAM SPRINGS -- Denham Spring High broke a seven-game losing streak with a resounding 5-0 victory over Walker on Friday.
WALKER – Zachary stayed slightly ahead of Walker throughout the game – a couple of hits more, a couple of runs more – to take a 4-2 win on Wednesday in a District 4-5A opener.
Teams build a schedule designed to prepare for what they might encounter come playoff time. For District 4-5A teams, the 10-game grind that closes the regular season out is a built-in litmus test that stretches over three weeks.
RESERVE – Kailey Chachere delivered a clutch two-out single to score Haleigh Pourciau in the top of the 7th inning and Pourciau worked around a one-out error in the bottom of the inning as Walker edged Riverside Academy 3-2 on Tuesday.
GEISMAR – Things about scoring runs in baseball is it doesn’t matter how, when or how as long as you wind up with one more than the other guy.
ST. AMANT -- Seems like an easy enough strategy for Walker coach Randy Sandifer: Give the ball to Lane Thomas and feel pretty confident about your chances.
SULPHUR -- A quick, error-aided beginning and Haleigh Pourciau’s dominance in the circle were the right combination for Walker to prevail Friday at the Sulphur Spring Classic.
LAFAYETTE -- Walker’s season has had its frustrating moments for various reasons. The Wildcats added another chapter to that story on Friday.
