Cameron Armstead

Scotlandville's Cameron Armstead (16) accounted for threee TDs in the Hornets win over Live Oak.

BATON ROUGE - Going into halftime, Scotlandville was clinging to a narrow one-touchdown lead over Live Oak.

Five minutes into the second half, Scotlandville erupted for three straight touchdown to create all the separation the Hornets needed in a 37-7 District 4-5A victory over Live Oak.

Live Oak’s (4-3, 1-3) offense couldn’t get the ball rolling, totaling 201 yards of offense. Ideally a run-first team, the Eagles finished with well over twice as many passing yards as rushing 144 to 57).

“Our defensive coaches, coach (Jason) Wilks, coach (Alvin Hulbert), and coach Ricky Williams, those guys came through with a great plan,” Scotlandville head coach Jules Sullen said. “They sat me down and said ‘coach, let’s try this’. Sometimes as a head coach you can be a little stubborn, but I was able to bend and those guys came up with a good plan.

“That is an awesome team,” Sullen added, pointing to the Live Oak bench. “That quarterback and those running backs are very good. Hats off to my defensive and offensive staff.”

Scotlandville (4-3, 2-2) put up exactly 300 yards of offense, with 172 coming on the ground and 128 through the air. Quarterback Cameron Armstead went 10 of 12 passing, featuring three TD passes and one rushing.

Armstead credited the Scotlandville defense’s performance for giving him the space to play freely and confidently.

Scotlandville took the lead on its first drive of the game, jump-started by a 40-yard run by Jeremiah Harris. Harris ran a power to the far side, then cut back when he saw the Eagles overpursuing to cut him off.

That big run set up the game’s first touchdown, a 13-yard play action roll out pass from Armstead to a wide open Jimyon Profit at the far pylon for a 6-0 lead that held up to halftime.

Scotlandville started to find its groove in the second half, while Live Oak, which lost to the Hornets for the ninth straight time, seemingly couldn't catch a break.

Armstead passed for a 21-yard TD to Jontrail Taylor to cap a 5-play, 61-yard drive to open the second half.

The Hornets defense then got in on the action when defensive end Jahvon Grisby forced a fumble on Live Oak quarterback Sal Palermo's option pitch which Darius Williams recovered at the Eagles' 10-yard line.

Three plays later, Jacorey James completed the 13-point swing by reaching the endzone to make it 20-0.

“We have to answer,” Live Oak coach Brett Beard said. “We can’t just continue to let them have all the breaks. We have to make the breaks, we have to make some things happen. We can’t let the ball bounce in the opposite direction and be okay with it. We have to figure out a way to persevere though that and handle the adversity.”

Live Oak suffered a turnover on its next possession when Palermo threw an interception on third-and-13 and Armstead passed 33 yards to Sylvester Boulingy for a TD and Armstead converted a two-point conversion to widen the lead, 28-0. He later capped his team's scoring on a 6-yard TD run.

Live Oak avoided a shutout, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Palermo to Darian Ricard that completed a 7-play, 83-yard drive.

“You start with yourself,” Beard said, “I’m not doing good enough of a job as a head coach. We all have to look at ourselves in the mirrors. We all have to decide where we want to go with this and what direction we want this program to go in. We all have to get better.”
