CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Denham Springs High closed its trip to the Perfect Game High School Showdown with a bang on Saturday, romping past Winder-Barrow 15-1 in the third-place game.

The Yellow Jackets (9-7) turned 9 hits into a big offensive day and grabbed control quickly with a pair of two-run innings, four runs in the third and a seven-run barrage in the 5th.

J.P. Preston and Nick Moreau were the ringleaders. Preston was 3-for-3 with a triple and he chased in runs with each of his hits. Moreau was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Cade Doughty drove in two runs with productive outs.

Chandler Pope got the victory in relief after entering in the 3rd inning. He retired nine of the 11 batters he faced and extinguished Winder-Barrow’s only real threat.

The Yellow Jackets finished the weekend 2-2 and head home to host Catholic at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Houston County (Ga.) 5, DSHS 4 (10)

CARTESRVILLE, Ga. – Denham Springs High revved up its offense early Friday in a rematch with Houston County (Ga.). But it was the Bears chipping away and getting the last key hit that made the difference in the extra-inning triumph.

DSHS pushed home four runs in the first 4 innings against the same team that blanked the Jackets the day before. Doughty and Moreau struck the big blows: A two-run home run in the 1st inning from Doughty and Moreau’s two-run double in the 4th.

Moreau’s hit was Denham’s fifth of the game, but Houston County pitchers Chandler Dawson, Bryant Rowell and Dylan Tabor buckled down after that and surrendered only two more hits over the last 6 frames.

Meanwhile, the Bears chipped away against Jackets’ starter Chris Courville with single runs in four of the first 5 innings -- all unearned as a result of four infield miscues.

After Jacob Profit chased home the tying run with a two-out single, the teams both hit offensive lulls. Doughty took over on the mound in the 5th inning and gave up just one hit in 4 innings.

The Jackets finally blinked in the 10th inning. Moreau came on in relief and created trouble for himself by walking Profit and Corbet Luna to start the at-bat. Cam Jones made Moreau pay when he punched a single that scored Profit with the game-winner.

Moreau absorbed the loss but was also 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to anchor the Denham offense.
