BATON ROUGE -- Shot-making is one Live Oak’s main strengths and that turned out to be a good thing Friday.

Belaire pushed and prodded the Eagles from start to finish before Live Oak found an opening late in the game to eke out a 61-56 triumph in District 4-5A play.

The Eagles had to adjust to the Bengals’ slower pace and did so by making shots at a slower rate, but plenty from beyond the 3-point arc. Seven of Live Oak’s 18 makes were 3s – three in the first quarter and two more in the second in a game that was close throughout.

The biggest difference, though, was how the Eagles (17-12, 3-2 District 4-5A) fared at the free-throw line, particularly with the game on line. Live Oak was 18-for-18 at the foul stripe, 14 of those in a fourth period.

In fact, Belaire (5-17, 1-4) had a 56-55 advantage until DaDa Capling, Vince Bayonne and Halen Cox connected on 2-of-2 free throws each to seal the win.

Capling led the Eagles with 23 points, anchored by 3 treys and an 8-for-8 night at the stripe. Lawrence Pierre added 11 points and also buried three 3-pointers.

Live Oak finishes up district play Tuesday when it entertains Walker at 7 p.m. Belaire is idle Tuesday and then hosts Zachary on Feb. 16.

Theodis Harrison buried three 3s and led the Bengals with 18 points. Chad Starwood added 12.
